Celebrating Women's Excellence: International Women's Day for Assistants

Hey everyone, it's International Women's Day! Since the assistant profession is so female-dominated, it's the perfect time to celebrate the incredible impact women make in these roles.

Let's delve into your journey to greater recognition, the crucial part you play in today's workplace, and the broader fight for women's equality that shaped the opportunities you have now.

The "Secretary" Era: A Pop Culture Snapshot

Think back to shows like "Mad Men," set in the 1960s, where secretaries were often portrayed as fetching coffee and aspiring primarily to find a husband. This reflected a time when opportunities for women in the workplace were severely limited, and positions like secretary were among the few available options. While essential, the role was frequently undervalued and didn't always provide a path for career advancement. Yet, even within these restrictions, dedicated and talented women found ways to excel and contribute significantly to their organizations.

Women Powerhouses: Smashing Glass Ceilings

Alongside the evolution of the secretary role, trailblazing women challenged the status quo across various professions. Icons like Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought tirelessly for gender equality under the law, arguing landmark cases that redefined

women's rights. Political figures like Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress, shattered barriers through their leadership and unwavering dedication to public service. These women, and countless others, paved the way for greater opportunities across all fields, including the assistant profession.

The 9-5 Movement: A Workforce Revolution

In the 1970s, a group of female office workers in Boston, spearheaded by Karen Nussbaum had had enough of low pay, limited opportunities, and everyday sexism. They formed 9to5, the National Association of Working Women, sparking a national movement for workplace equity. These women weren't just pushing for better coffee – they organized protests, filed lawsuits, and lobbied for legislation that changed the game for women across professions. They achieved successes like winning protections against sexual harassment and expanding access to childcare – victories that benefited not just secretaries, but women in every career path.

The Evolution Beyond "Just a Secretary"

While movies like 1980s "9 to 5" were comedies, they tapped into very real workplace frustrations experienced by women (along with providing a very catchy theme song). Back then, the term "secretary" often carried a dismissive feel. Organizations like the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), formerly the National Secretaries Association, were instrumental in advocating for skill recognition, championing a shift in terminology, and advancing the overall professionalism of the field. Today the IAAP has branches across the USA and continues to advocate for the administrative profession across the board, running conventions, organising training and providing a community for everyone.

"A great administrative assistant is priceless, and you only realize how priceless when you don't have one." – Unknown

So, What Does the Modern Assistant Actually Do?

Today's assistants are far more than note-takers! Think of yourselves like master jugglers, expertly balancing complex schedules and prioritizing competing demands. You're diplomatic navigators of office politics, miracle-workers when it comes to pulling off last-minute requests, and strategic partners to executives. Seriously, have you ever witnessed an assistant track down an impossible-to-find document or materialize a much-needed meeting room? It's like business magic! Assistants often embody the ability to anticipate problems before they arise and offer proactive solutions – skills indispensable to smooth organizational operations.

Progress and Lingering Challenges

Even with incredible progress, challenges remain. Sometimes, the pay doesn't quite match up with the immense value you bring to a company. And occasionally, those old-fashioned, limiting views about assistants still linger, which can be frustrating for the talented and ambitious professionals dedicated to their roles. Yet, it's important to recognize that the

evolution of this profession has been impressive, and opportunities for development and advancement are increasingly available.

International Women's Day: A Time for Celebration and Advocacy

That's why this day matters. It's about celebrating how far you've come as assistants, fostering a supportive community within the profession, and reminding everyone that you are essential to the smooth running of many organizations!

Companies can play a big role by supporting their female assistants. Offering professional development, pathways to leadership, and actually paying you what you deserve shows a true understanding of your vital contributions.

The true value of International Womens Day though is in its capacity to remind us that we´re all in this together. Look around you. Whether it be your colleagues, your bosses, your friends or your family, I can guarantee you that you´re surrounded by incredible women who are a source of inspiration. And lets not forget that YOU are the source of inspiration for others too.

So. let´s work together and help raise each other up. Whether that´s by mentoring, networking, lending a helping hand when things are rough, or simply going for a glass of wine at the end of a long week, remember to appreciate the incredible women in your life and what they´ve achieved, and never forget that we´re more powerful when we´re together!
